Follow-up Comment #9, bug #53893 (project octave): OK, fixing that bug clears things up a bit. It's just the variables windows (which are variable_dock_widget, not octave dock widget) for which this happens. Can you narrow it down further? For example, does this only happen when dragging the variable sub panel to a different location? Only dragging the variable sub-panel outside the Variable Editor? How about if you press the undock button? Pressing the redock button. My suspicion is that this has to do with the work-around for https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-44813 Recall, the solution for the above is to force any "floated-by-dragging" QDockWidget to redock and undock again directly.
