Follow-up Comment #36, bug #53733 (project octave):
The thing that would shed more light is to understand why the smaller test
program also crashes. Show me how to make that work reliably with or without
gdb. Since it is much simpler, that should be a far easier task than trying
to debug the crash in Octave.
