Follow-up Comment #4, bug #53217 (project octave): Sorry, I *can* reproduce this. I forgot to change from gnuplot graphics toolkit to Qt graphics toolkit. The issue is as I described, but note that the warning/error message arises from pressing the figure window's close button *multiple* times. If one presses the close window just once and then types 'q' to exit pager mode no error appears. So, the GUI probably keeps queuing a bunch of "close" commands for which the figure no longer exists.
