I also noted Octave now doesn't allow editing of string and sq_string objects
anymore.  These used to be interpreted by the variable editor as (editable)
char arrays, each cell one character.
The latter was not ideal; yet being able to edit a string or sq_string
directly is very useful.

As to structs and struct arrays, I have some pics of what Matlab does in patch
#8656, see bottom of comment #37.

A little OT: 
One thing that may need thinking over is keeping the "Autofit by column width"
setting for the variable editor. I found that setting this may lead to
ridiculous long waiting times for large arrays. Maybe something that could
provoke dedicated bug reports.
