Follow-up Comment #25, bug #50479 (project octave):

I just run ./configure
and I did a clean rebuild recently.
It appeared that this was what fixed it for me. But,...

The unexplained behavior is that I have osmesa and the
build uses it, and that works, but the build of the
/doc/interpreter stuff uses gnuplot!!!
I think that there was a change in the build script
to use gnuplot even though osmesa and everything that
fltk and qt needs are available.

However, this does not explain Dmitri's problem.
