I checked in a fix here
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/17dc6c7ef427).  This was not
easy, although the patch looks easy in the end.  The regression tests are
passing, as well as the two tests in this bug report, but feel free to do more
testing.
