Follow-up Comment #5, bug #49718 (project octave):

For the OP - does printing to an svg file also cause Octave to crash? By
"crash" you mean that Octave exits immediately, right?

The reporter has said that printing to an eps failed in the same way, but I
see that even the eps format makes a call to the external epstool utility.
Looks like printing to svg is the only one that doesn't use any external
programs, only cat.

I agree that it has been suggested before to only install Octave in
directories with safe character sets. Maybe I am in the minority but I think
it should be possible to install Octave in a directory with any name, and I'm
willing to test for and fix things that break because of that, assuming I'm
able to reproduce the error on a GNU system.
