Follow-up Comment #2, bug #49695 (project octave):
While I agree with you in spirit, this behavior is explicitly described in the
Matlab documentation:
[filename,permission,machinefmt,encodingOut] = fopen(fileID)
An invalid fileID returns empty character vectors for all output arguments.
so I wonder if we shouldn't therefore match it nevertheless. I would entirely
agree with you if it were for fread or fwrite but this is here a very specific
syntax with fopen.
