I created test.xlsx by opening one of the .xls files I use in Matlab, then
deleting all sheets except main and wmat*.  I then saved the file in the xlsx
format. The original .xls file may have had some Matlab artifacts, but
definitely none from Octave. 

I couldn't get Octave to open an .xls file, which is why I saved it in as an
xlsx. Perhaps if I could use the 'COM' interface I would be able to read and
write to .xls, as the Matlab does. As I mentioned in comment #3, I am
firewalled from accessing octave.sourceforge, as that site is completely
blocked at work. I can't even reach the domain. If the windows package file
were to find itself uploaded here, I would then have access to it.
