Follow-up Comment #1, bug #47443 (project octave):
Wow, worked on this 2 days before I submit a bug report, and then solve it 5
minutes later...
For anyone else in a simular situation here is what I found:
The "Command Window" looks like it ties into OpenGL somewhere along the line
(probably through Qt). On a VirtualBox'ified Ubuntu, you need to make sure
that Virtual Box's Video 3D Acceleration is turned on, re-install
GuestAdditions (to make sure it grabs all the GL virtualbox tie-in drivers)
and reboot (to easily make sure it all gets loaded).
After I did this my command Window text appeared :)
(Also I tried running octave as root [I know bad idea], from the directory I
built it in using the "./run-octave" script, and it also failed to show the
command window text. I also found that if I ran octave as root after I ran
that script it still failed to show text in command window, but once I
switched back to my normal user account it worked fine again)
