Follow-up Comment #1:

According to the documentation


"x0 should be a two-element vector specifying two points which bracket a

"If x0 is a single scalar then several nearby and distant values are probed in
an attempt to obtain a valid bracketing. If this is not successful, the
function fails."

For you the second quote failed. Maybe MATLAB implements a smarter guessing
bracketing strategy. If you try the first quote to your example:

fzero(f, [pi/2, 3*pi/2])
ans =  3.50262524454451

you get the very same result.
