Follow-up Comment #12, bug #45458 (project octave):
So it looks like the freeze is due to fontconfig initializing its font files
cache. What about calling "FcInit ()" (currently in "txt-eng-ft.cc
(ft_manager::ft_manager)") at startup and displaying a splash screen as
proposed in bug #41088?
AFAIR this is what GIMP does on mac, clearly stating that it is loading font
files.
