Follow-up Comment #2, bug #44840 (project octave):

I am not surprised that it works for some combinations of
systems. I tried it between Fedoras (20 and 21) which usually
work. Also, the test I ran using Matlab was between the systems
that failed for Octave.

And, I know all too well about the complexities of X11, differing
systems, etc.

Still it would be very useful to make this better. I will try
to do more diagnosis, but this cannot happen for a few weeks.
