Follow-up Comment #8, bug #42176 (project octave):

Looking at the git repository, the change happened very recently in 10/2014.

The AC_PREREQ line was changed to add m4 quoting around the version number and
at the same time the version number was changed.  Might be coincidence, but
I'm still thinking typo.
