This function is apparently something that is used by GUIDE-generated GUIs.
I'm marking this as a feature request with a low priority. Unless someone
wants to take on the enormous task of providing GUIDE-like functionality for
Octave, I think it is highly unlikely that it will be implemented any time
soon.
