Follow-up Comment #6, bug #42785 (project octave):
I am inclined to agree with Peter. It's not an abomination, but there's
something unaesthetic about it. Perhaps it is because the blue disk suggest
perspective whereas the squares are drawn face on. The orange is also a bit
garish.
If there are concerns about changing the logo completely, I would suggest the
intermediate solution of removing the squares. Just the inclined blue disk (or
some variation on it) would, I think, look neat.
