Follow-up Comment #3, bug #40726 (project octave):
Thinking about this some more...
The canonicalize function would only need to run on Windows. After all, why
fix something that's not broken? That is, scratch my bullet point about Unixy
systems, it's irrelevant.
Messing with what Readline returns on completion is beside the point IMO. Even
on Windows, you can be conditioned into using '/' for dir separators if you're
routinely using e.g. the MinGW shell or Git for Windows.
