Follow-up Comment #4, bug #40246 (project octave):

I think I have a reasonable place for this, and it does work to stop plotting,
but it produces a lot of scary looking error messages on the screen.

Unfortunately, it doesn't solve the other issue with images.  So, I'll
continue to tackle this one, but the imagesc bug will need a different fix. 
I'll post back on the other report about that.
