Follow-up Comment #6, bug #39925 (project octave):

Just a guess, this problem is likely due to the fact that OpenGL uses floats
(single) for the backend.  This has caused no end of trouble in the past
(https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=32980) and is one of
the things preventing Octave from leaving gnuplot behind.
