Follow-up Comment #8, bug #39828 (project octave): I'm pretty sure Matlab intended this to be a degree symbol. See this posting on how to get a degree symbol (http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-2CH660/index.html). This is important for Octave user's because they can't get a degree symbol the other way by using the popularly mapped ASCII code 176.
