Follow-up Comment #1:

If you would click "details" on the octave-forge website for the symbolic
package you would see:

<QUOTE>
Build Dependencies:     ginac-devel
</QUOTE>

so the error message is telling you that you didn't have the required
dependencies installed.

Beware that the symbolic package hasn't seen much maintenance for a long time.
Even with ginac-devel installed you may hit other build errors (esp.on OSX),
and if you manage to get it installed anyway it may not even work properly.

Closing this bug as "invalid", category => Octave-Forge package.
