Follow-up Comment #8, bug #39063 (project octave):

I don't see any big issue in relaxing the constraint about the JVM arguments.
I think it's reasonable to accept anything that starts with a '-', but I
wouldn't try to validate them in octave, as it can be quite JVM implementation
dependent.

Arguments should be passed verbatim to the JVM, if they are not recognized or
invalid, I would assume JVM initialization fails and the error is reported at
octave level.
