Details:

When  I quit from interpreter after this sequence of commands:

function = f(a)
function f(a)
printf("%d", a)
endfunction
f(42)
function a = f(a)
endfunction

I see:
*** glibc detected *** octave: malloc(): smallbin double linked list
corrupted: 0x091cb938 ***
