Follow-up Comment #1:

Happily this has already been fixed, but on the development branch.  You can
get the fix either by building from Mercurial sources or waiting for the next
major release of Octave.  The impending minor release on the stable branch
(3.6.4) does not include this fix.  It needs to be the development code.
