I suppose this has already been fixed (or overhauled) a while ago as I can't
find this very line in the dev code, nor in changesets until 13 months ago.
(Hmmm it does ring a bell but from way back...)

Perhaps you'd better try the most recent textscan.m/strread.m/textread.m
before reporting more bugs:
