Follow-up Comment #8, bug #35157 (project octave):

It is not clear that i and j should be special cases.
How about pi, e, etc...?

By the way:
octave:1> a(pi) =1
error: subscript indices must be either positive integers or logicals

This message seems to be pretty popular already....
