Follow-up Comment #9, bug #34734 (project octave):

I did


hg import --exact strread.2.patch


to apply the patch at the location in which Philip wrote it. However,
Mercurial complains that the patch is corrupt. After some investigation, it
appears that the problem is that the last hunk should be at

I corrected this and rebased the patch to the stable branch. I attach it.
