Follow-up Comment #44, bug #30685 (project octave):
Another data point, strongly suggesting a gcc bug.
I was seeing similar problems (segfault in sigemptyset) on
x86_64 running 64 bit RHEL 5.5, after a successful build on RHEL 6.0 system.
It does look like is a compiler issue:
the segfault occured when compiling with gcc 4.2.1, which although
later than the 4.1.2 most people posting were using, is admittedly
old.
Recompiled on the same platform, with same options using gcc 4.4.3
and the issue went away.
