Details:

octave forces a white background on gnuplot (default is black on my system)
Whenever I zoom in, the background changes to black and the text is
unreadable.

When I use whitebg() to turn the background color to black,
zooming works fine... unfortunately the text is missing while printing after
whitebg()

I can use whitebg() to change the plotting window back to a white background
and plotting works fine again... but whenever opening a new plotting window
after using whitebg() ever, the text remains unreadable no matter what I try.
