Follow-up Comment #10, bug #30721 (project octave):

I *did* get messages about ":=", though I can't access them right now.

I think the problem is elsewhere (in gnulib?), due to this:

n file included from sysdir.h:34,
from dir-ops.cc:34:
../libgnu/dirent.h:380: error: '::dirfd' has not been declared
