OK, that suggests not touching the nmh code.

Are you sure?  Did you try an alias that references another alias,

    nmhworkers; nmhlist
    nmhlist: address@hidden

I'll send this message to "nmhworkers" using that.

I'd leave that alone too, unless someone fixes nmh.
