Sounds useful, but as you say, we'd want some sort of syntactic
wrapper so as not to break backcompat.

Can you give more detail about what the change is intended
to achieve? I think it might be less confusing to have that
as a separate patch -- I don't think it is related to the regex
work, is it?

(Also, as Valdis points out, if we want to handle both utmp
and utmpx we want an autoconf test for it.)
