An example: The differences between envelope recipients and
what is actually listed in the RFC (2)822 header.

Many of the lightweight sendmail replacement programs
will grab address from the message header to determine
recipients, and this behavior is undesirable for nmh uses.

This is a very important point.

Also, if you want to use features like future delivery (RFC 4865), deliver-by (RFC 2852), or message tracking (RFC 3885) you pretty much have to do your initial submission via SMTP (typically authenticated on port 587).
