I hadn't thought of that angle, and it is a problem.

Couldn't you press ^O to get the prompt, read whether it has an "[XXXX
Format]" suffix, and then cancel out of the prompt?
Alternatively, there could be an indicator on the titlebar indicating
whether the file has DOS endings, Mac endings, or a mix of both. That
would make it easier to determine which file has what endings if you
have multiple files open. However, that would also make the titlebar
display code more complex.
