To be precise: "i.e." means "that is" and "e.g." means "for 
instance".

Certainly, a comma can be put there, but is not needed.  Since the 
abbreviation itself already makes one pause a little when reading 
it, and a comma after a period looks kind of strange, many people 
prefer to leave it out.
