that's the point of the session stuff in the first setup page ... if you dont 
have any setup, just click the 'Default Session', hit the Load button, change 
the translation stuff to UTF8, go back to the session page and hit 'Save' ... 
now whenever you run putty, it should default to UTF8

nah, it just shows it as two funky characters instead of one
