Indeed, I've observed the same problem.

In such cases, I'd try the following:
$ mozilla-bonobo-viewer file://home/me/test.pdf application/pdf
This should show a window containing just the gpdf-component.
In my case it currently displays a gray area with some scroll bars.
Then I try the same thing with a different document and a different
component:
$ mozilla-bonobo-viewer file://home/me/test.ps application/postscript
This works.
Please note that the viewer is currently kind of broken in stand-alone
mode - the component will only occupy a small part of its window.
Nevertheless, the procedure proves that other components can be loaded
correctly, and so the problem must lie with the gpdf component itself.

Maybe someone else can confirm if the problem exists on other
distributions. Then we can decide if a bug needs to be filed
with debian or directly with gpdf.
