Sorry to follow up to myself, but a little more info...

mtn sync also doesn't work, with a similar error:

mtn: error: sqlite error: SQL logic error or missing database
mtn: error: make sure database and containing directory are writeable
mtn: error: and you have not run out of disk space

The drive has space, and the file and directory are r/w.  I tried using
sqlite3 to .dump/.read recreate the database.  No errors from sqlite3, but
also no help to monotone.  

I'm fairly good about syncing to my server (when connected), so I have a
pre-damaged database to fall back to.  It's just missing one trivial change,
so easy recovery.  

Thoughts?  I'll keep playing with it...
