I can't think of any reason why this directory needs to be a short
name. If the executable's changing name, then I can see it might be
better to change it.
It annoys me sometimes looking through my home directory and seeing
hundreds of obscurely named . files and directories (wondering which
might be safe to remove), but from that point of view .mtn and
.monotone are about equal: .mtn would match the executable name, and
it won't be a secret that mtn is short for "monotone" (I guess the
packages will still be named monotone).
Using ~/.mtn for the config dir and _mtn for the top of root workspace
dir strikes me as potentially confusing, but I don't really know---I
don't keep my home directory in a VCS. I think I like _MTN better.
_MONOTONE or something's probably too long (since we are going to see
that dir).
