directories will be stored in manifests, by name. you can store empty
directories. there will be an "add_directory" event, to complement
rename_directory and delete_directory.

yes. they're just stored inside the manifest now. would have done this
initially, when adding attributes, but I didn't want to break the
manifest file format. now I have no choice wrt. storing directories in
manifests, so I figured it's time to clean up all pending
dissatisfying aspects of the manifest file format (including some
small restrictions on the forms of filenames which will be
disappearing).
