Have you tried letting it run for a few minutes to see if it finished?
When I say that the paranoia checking slows things down unacceptably,
I mean it can really slow things down :-) Doing a pull just now from a
somewhat old database on my desktop computer took about 4 minutes of
CPU time to save 48 revs; this happened right between where you say it
hangs and when it actually finished.
