Can we back up for a moment to ask whether update should silently replace 
deleted files?  I know that in CVS, the right way to back out some changes to 
a file that you screwed up is to delete the file and then 'cvs update' it, but 
this hardly seems like such a natural, intuitive and correct "feature" that we 
want to copy it.  Especially since Monotone versions trees, not files, so 
'monotone update' on a single file doesn't make much sense.  Besides, Monotone 
already has a better way to do this: "monotone revert".

Otherwise, if that's not your goal, I don't know why silently replacing 
deleted files would be a sensible thing to do at all.
