I've done this and tried the same operation again. The timeout at the end of the pull is still there, though the message on the client side was different this time:
monotone: exchanged goodbyes and flushed output on fd 5 (peer host.siliconcircus.com), disconnecting
...and the client was then able to check the project out succesfully. So, a 90% success, but there's still the niggling TCP timeout and the fact that after its message ("monotone: fd 6 (peer 123.45.67.89:45849) read failed, disconnecting"), the server exits, which doesn't seem wildly desireable.
