[monit] Monit start and stop commands and symbolic links

I've been experiencing some issues with having monit 4.10 automatically start mongrels.  Of the 4 servers i've installed monit on, it's worked nearly flawlessly on 2, but failed on the other two.  After some initial investigation, I've identified the following differences between the server configurations as the probable cause:

  1. The two working servers are running ruby 1.8.6, while the dysfunctional servers are running ruby 1.8.7-pl22
  2. The two working servers have custom executables (including ruby) installed directly in /software/bin, while the dysfunctional servers are have symlinks to the installed executables in /software/bin

I suspect that (2) has more to do with the issue than (1), especially since running the command monit issues from a shell works.

On that note, is anyone aware of how monit deals with references to symlinks in start program and start program clauses?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Mitch Williams
