[Mingw-cross-env-list] Autotools and pkg-config not working for vlc x-compilation

Hello,
I managed to x-compile vlc with mxe. But at some point (at the install 
stage) on package could not be found. After all O found that I should 
modify a PKG_CONFIG_PATH variable with the suffixed version 
(PKG_CONFIG_PATH_i686_w64_mingw32). This was not handled by the 
configure script. I could "solve" it by deleting the 
i686-w64-mingw32-pkg-config and reverting to the system installed one.

Is it an autotools issue not ammending the PKG_CONFIG_PATH variable or 
is there a way to use the mxe pkg_config with the unsuffixed variables?
