Thanks, my bad. I had installed all that was obviously missing (like
scons), but I hadn't specifically issued all the commands in the
"requirements" section - hence I missed g++-multilib. It works as
expected now. Sorry for the noise.

One observation: (at least on Ubuntu) the "aptitude" command must be
prefixed by "sudo " to become root temporarily.
