Not yet. I currently use GDAL for experimental research work.
I will probably soon release a subproject for generic array data
import / export / manipulation, in particular for sensor data. But
this subproject uses GDAL only for import/export and not for its more
advanced capabilities, so it probably does not qualify as
'interesting' :)
