Thanks for your investigation. If it is too much work, let's just
drop a note in the docs and wait for Apple to do their homework.

In other words, this isn't exactly a win32 cross compiling problem,
but a general problem that MacOS 10.6 is unable to compile a GCC.
Did I understand that correctly?

Just to be sure, it would be great if you could try to compile
a vanilla GCC (and maybe Binutils) on that system. Just grab their
sources from:

ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/binutils/binutils-2.19.1.tar.bz2
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gcc/gcc-4.4.0/gcc-4.4.0.tar.bz2

and do a plain "./configure && make".

If that also fails, we know that it's certainly Apple's fault
and currently can't do anything about it.

If that succeeds, the incompatibility might be introduced by
the MinGW project or by TDM. In that case, we could try to
switch from TDM-GCC to MinGW-GCC, or make an even bigger jump
to mingw-w64: http://mingw-w64.sourceforge.net/

I fully agree. It's the same with TDM-GCC 4.4.1 - let drop a note
in the docs and wait for Apple (or TDM or GNU) to do their homework.
Let's hope they fix it in one of their next releases.

However, your test with vanilla Binutils/GCC is still useful for
the docs of release 2.8.
