According to Albert Chin on 6/20/2008 5:19 PM:
| I've built m4-1.4.11 on many Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Tru64 UNIX, and Redhat
| Linux systems. Most fail with:
| Checking ./126.diversions
| @ ../doc/m4.texinfo:4711: Origin of test
| ./126.diversions: stderr mismatch
| *** m4-tmp.24620/m4-xerr Fri Jun 20 22:17:24 2008
| --- m4-tmp.24620/m4-err Fri Jun 20 22:17:23 2008
| ***************
| *** 0 ****
| --- 1,2 ----
| + m4: ERROR: copying inserted file: Broken pipe
| + m4: write error

Known issue. This is due to running the testsuite in an environment where
SIGPIPE is inherited as ignored, and worked around by this patch:
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=m4.git;a=commitdiff;h=2b570fc

You may want to consider changing your test environment to not ignore
SIGPIPE, however.

You may be interested in trying a recent snapshot, which has fixed several
of the issues you have reported (and at any rate, will tell us what else
needs fixing before we can release 1.6):
