The --enable-widec option would work if the default curses library uses 
It's more likely that
will do what you want.

"lynx -version" will tell what library you are using, e.g.,

        Lynx Version 2.8.8pre.4 (11 Jan 2014)
        libwww-FM 2.14, SSL-MM 1.4.1, GNUTLS 2.8.6, ncurses 5.7.20100313(wide)
        Built on linux-gnu Jan 19 2014 09:51:49
